the reason oppressed groups say “___ are awful” instead of “some ___ are awful” is because including the word “some” allows individuals of that group to detach themselves from the problem and shuck the blame off and say “well they arent really talking about me so i can ignore their opinions”, whereas stating that an entire group of oppressors is awful makes the individual think whether or not theyre included in the awfulness of that group and makes them consider their actions so thats why people say “men are awful” or “white people are awful” and if you take it personally you’re getting angry at the wrong people

#if you take it personally you’re probably part of the problem

I think both are bullshit to be honest, no matter how oppressed a group is. Saying either “some ____ are awful” or “___are awful” are both statements used to generalize and cast unfair judgement over people. That won’t help at all. People don’t change their hearts just because you judge them without knowing them. It’s only bound to piss people off and perpetuate the problem, or worse, devalue it’s importance due to generalization and stereotyping.

If they take it personally, you don’t know if they are taking it personally because they are offended to be insulted, or because they are part of the problem like you said. It’s only normal to defend yourself when you feel attacked.

You people think that people have a black and white mind, but it’s quite QUITE more complex than “Oh I feel attacked because I too am an awful person and I don’t like being called on it”. Good people also don’t like to be fingerpointed. And again, no matter how oppressed you are, it doesn’t or at least it really shouldn’t give you free card to insult people you label as oppressors.

Regardless, feel free to use any kind of statement to refer to people. My 50 cents in this is that it won’t help your cause, it will devalue it. Can’t solve awfulness with unfairness. You’re only becoming awful yourselves.

This is why I love you, man.

generalizing an entire group of many many people tends to make some of them mad. Especially when the generalization doesn’t apply to them and yet they are being lumped in with negative people.
