so uh
we’ve seen in canon that when a gem is injured, they (eventually) come back good as new!
we can also see that their “reincarnated” selves wear clothing representing where they were injured in the first place
so if garnet in the 80′s looked like this:

She’s also got the weird gloves that cover the middle finger.
Did she have her fingers broken and then had her leg mauled/taken off?

Somebody broke her leg and as she was receding into her gems she flipped them off with both hands. That’s what I’d like to believe.
