IF YOUR HEART DIDN’T SHATTER INTO A MILLION FRAGMENTS WHEN THAT LAST LINE WAS SAID YOU ARE NOT HUMAN.

I watched this the other week and i started crying my eyes out. 

See. It’s not fair. They took Goofy, who even in GOOF TROOP was still just overly silly and meant for splapstick, and they give Goofy real world fatherhood problems. And to this DAY I will still mist up for this scene.

Watch this with Who Framed Roger Rabbit in mind. Think of Goofy as a working actor. How Roger talked of Goofy’s commitment, comedic timing, grace, natural hilarity, “one of the greats”. You realize all those original shorts were -in that context- not a reflection of his character and personality, but his job for a time. When he was done filming those cartoons he was going home to a wife who would eventually pass away, leaving him to retire from showbiz to take care of his infant son. Goofy gave up making shorts (which is why there aren’t any being made anymore) to be a dad who worked as a photographer at a mall taking family portraits with a retired former co-star Pete who likely got him the position. Pete is cutthroat and money loving. Goofy is humble. So he took a low paying glamour free job, just to be available for his son.

Then think to Tiny Toons, where they explain that “toon” characters stay young so long as they can still make people laugh. So Goofy stayed young for a while keeping Max happy, but he’s visibly older by the time this movie happened, because Max was being a tough teen and not laughing for his dad’s jokes anymore.
