Btw I don’t think that’s the message of the book. To me it was “anyone can be horrible under a mask of righteousness” not necessarily that everyone is.
  9. little-bloodied-angel said: @fra080389-2-me I’m okay with Esmeralda being actually Rroma because she should have been from the start and I’m not in Hugo’s mind but honestly I think he added that because he waffled last minute on having an “undesirable” as a heroine, just like the mixed messages he gives with Fantine in Les Mis. I’m more-or-less okay with the happy ending, whatever, it’s a movie for kids, though WHY they picked this to make a kid’s movie is beyond me. The difference is the level
  10. fra080389-2-me said: @little-bloodied-angel They changed the entire soul of the story to make it acceptable for the kids, if you are okay with the changes that eliminate the elements of the book you disapprove, then to complain about the others changes that incurred in other people’s disapproval is hypocritical, or censorship is wrong, or it isn’t.
  11. fra080389-2-me said: @little-bloodied-angel I doubt Hugo was particularly interested to condemn the treatment of the Court in itself, it was more a “society/human beings are horrible creatures” thing. Paris didn’t exactly “hated” Quasimodo in the Disney movie, and the ending message with Quasimodo saying Frollo lied about the world and the people being horrible and the only horrible people were people like Frollo, is the total opposite of the message of the book. In the book, world IS horrib
  12. little-bloodied-angel said: @fra080389-2-me (cont) kid’s movie (how Quasi died) but the fact that they turned a racist rapist into a good guy to have a conventionally attractive male lead (Phoebus) is ridiculous and gross, and creating the Good Archbishop and making Frollo laity to avoid criticizing the Church in a story where that’s half of the point is not only ridiculous, but cowardly. Plus Frollo only saved him because they’re related anyway so.

Paris only stopped loathing Quasimodo at the end of the movie, so not much change there. I agree that Hugo waffling last-minute on Esmeralda being Rroma (g-psy is a slur) on a book that was supposed to condemn the treatment of her people is ridiculous and was well changed. You also don’t want to include suicide in a
  15. fra080389-2-me said: @little-bloodied-angel In the book Quasimodo was actually abandoned by his parents, Paris actually loathed him and Frollo was actually saved him… and Esmeralda wasn’t a gypsy but a newborn who was kidnapped by them… sooooo, the mouse changed A LOT to avoid controversial topics…
