Steven’s first dream involved him being the protagonist of a 60′s style sitcom, where each of the gems fill a stock character; Pearl being the over protective mother, Amethyst being the irresponsible sister, and Garnet being the “cool” person he looks up to. All of their roles correspond with how Steven sees them outside of the dream. The difference being that they’re human. None of them have visible gems on their bodies, and garnet has two eyes. They’re what is considered normal, because steven loves them for who they are, and not because they’re magic. Jumping back to the previous episode.

Greg: *holds up his hand* Human beings?

Connie: *high-fives Greg* Human beings.

Steven: Human beings. *clutches his gem*

Here is Steven, questioning his humanity after being alienated by his father and his best friend. 

Steven’s dream was what he thinks would be a perfect life, where he doesn’t have to worry about gem stuff and the guilt of taking his mother away.

Steven wishes he was a normal boy.
