She’s a fucking psychiatrist.

Okay some responses are trying to correct me and say Harley Quinn “canonically” used sex to cheat her way to her degree. What yall actually mean is some hack shitlord neckbeard writers retconned this to be the case because they decided sexy blonde woman + doctor LOL MUST HAVE CHEATED WITH HER EVIL WOMANLY CHARMSHarley originates from Batman: The Animated Series where she was a serious, competent doctor and a genius, which is also backed up by other comic stuff I’ve seen so whatever turds wrote that other garbage they can huff their ow fartsACTUAL FAKE GEEK GUYS ONLY SUPERFICIALLY FAMILIAR WITH WHAT THEY’RE POSTING ABOUT
She’s a fucking Ph.D in psychology and criminology. She’s literally one of the most intelligent people in her field which is WHY she got to work with the Joker in the first place. She’s INSANELY intelligent and often outsmarts Joker in her own plans. She’s done things to Batman that Joker can only dream of because she doesn’t bullshit around when it comes to planning to kill him. Who the fuck’s the dumbass to call her “sexy but stupid” as if she doesn’t dumb herself down enough just to be AROUND Joker. omfg I need a minute.
Harley’s fake ditzy act is one of the best things about her character. People get lured in because she comes off as too naive to hurt a fly. Then she beats the crap out of them, robs them blind, you name it. Harley & Ivy are stellar examples of female villains who use sexist expectations as a weapon.
LET US NOT FORGET that in the ORIGINAL Harley canon BTAS she is the person who captured and damn near killed Batman and the ONLY reason she did not succeed in outsmarting the Bat is because the Joker hurled her out a window for it.
Honestly, I’ve wondered about the ditzy act. I’ve seen it described as a weapon like above, but it really feels more like a coping mechanism to me, a way of distancing her true self from what’s going on. It allows her to be a lot less affected by some of the horrible shit the Joker does.
Like when she’s talking to the Black Canary about her daughter, “Mistah J didn’t know about her. I knew that wouldn’t…that he wouldn’t…His work was too important. He couldn’t have a daughter. I went away for almost a year. When I came back to my puddin’, he was so funny, he acted like he didn’t even notice I was gone.”
From the scene, you know she knows it wasn’t a joke. But the light, bubbly, naive personality she puts on allows her to frame it like that, even in this serious moment.
When he hurls her out the window after she captures and almost kills Batman, the very same perception of naivety allows her to blame herself, to say ‘he didn’t get the joke’ (a reoccurring line from that story, tying back to Joker’s childhood, and the million lies he’s told.) Really, Harley knows she’s being treated wrong, that his rage has nothing to do with the fact that she had to explain the joke to him.
His rage is because he sees her as so far beneath him, so inferior, and yet she manages to do what he never could.
When The Joker’s not around, she’s still very much light and bubbly, but she allows herself to say the clever things she keeps to herself around the Joker. Instead of being the one who sets up the punchlines, she’s allowed to acknowledge how clever she is.
I feel the ditzy act is a way of coping with abuse and trauma, keeping it at an arm’s length until she’s ready to deal with it.
I’m just thinking out loud here, what do you think?
She’s not a ph.D, she’s an MD, she’s a psychiatrist. She canonically went to medical school, you can’t fuck your way into med school.
shes had SO many shitty ass dude writers recently they have no idea her character shes likely smarter than joker and batman combind and the only thing preventing her from taking gotham for herself is her obbession with the joker JUST LIKE BATMAN theyre foils of each other and her ditziness is an act???? shes a calculated SERIAL KILLER
ALL OF THIS.
ALL OF FUCKING THIS.
I could write a lot more on this but I’m at work right now.
(I agree with the ‘trauma response’ person)
YES
Honestly, Harley is someone to be terrified of.
