I’m an artist on here and deviant ART. So I see things here and there all the time. Mind you, I don’t have more than 10 followers. I don’t have more than a handful of watchers, with no comments. This is from my perspective.
Every once in a while, I stumble across an artist who has as little followers as me, and doesn’t open commissions like I do. But they’re in need of money also. They can’t afford all these points, memberships, and things of that nature like I do. I can sympathize with them.
Then, I see the people who are super popular. They have Core membership. If they see a pony they want to adopt at a bidding station, pfft, no worries. Get commissions constantly. Well, not constantly. But where a week passes and at least they get another one before the last one they finish. People with patrons that get 300 dollars per month.
Me and that other artist don’t complain. Even if we have art just like the big guys, we get overlooked easily. Not even a ten point commission comes bouncing our way. When I put my heart and soul into an art piece, and not one single person comments or favorites it, yet I put it into several groups. I stifle the frown that I have, instead putting on a happy grin.
Then, those big artists come and complain about lack of money, saying that obviously they need more money. To buy useless things. Like going to Bronycon. Like getting a new tablet while they have one with a workable cord.
I can’t sympathize. Not in the least. I worked my butt off to get the simplest tablet I can get - not those fancy ones with the screen, just the touch pad one. I can’t even afford to go to a con only a 20 minute drive away due to not having enough money. Bronycon? By the time I work up enough money to go, and for a plane ticket, and for the hotel, and to convince my parents to let me go, the whole fandom will be dead.
NOT TO MENTION WHEN ARTISTS COMPLAIN THEY ARE NOT GETTING COMMISSIONS. AND THOSE WHO SAY THEY ARE TIRED OF COMMISSIONS.
Well, I’m sorry about that your getting even one commission. You don’t deserve it if you don’t appreciate the extra money.
Tired of commissions? Your the one that wants the money.
Some people just take advantage of this popular system. It is a horrible cycle.
I’m not saying people who actually need commissions are in the wrong. I’m not going to flame you for paying the rent, taxes, or food. I don"t want to stop your income, and I would happily sacrifice any commission I would get to put money in your pocket instead.
But when you buy a new tablet, or CORE membership (without it being gift, of course) and say, “LOOK HOW POOR I AM HURR DURR” that you don’t deserve your fans and commissions.

I agree with this person. I see too many popular artists who put out that they need money. Their fans literally throw money at them and the artist goes and spends it on stuff they don’t need. I have seen little to unknown artist struggling to get by and have posted just about everywhere that they are accepting commissions but not one single person goes to them, even when this artist’s work is just as good or even better than the popular artist’s.
I know by some keywords who wrote this. You need to chill and look at yourself. You have a Core membership, you have loyal, blind followers, you still have a Patreon thing. Come off anon and put on your big girl panties and tell us how you really feel, or message people you intend to, but don’t hide and bitch here.
I would still be questioning who this was if you hadn’t been specific about some details.
How can you tell who it is? There are some small artists out there with loyal followers, but having 10 - 20 loyal followers isn’t going get you through the hard times. What if only 1 or 2 of those loyal followers can actually afford a commission? Or what if they only have one person sending the lowest amount on Patreon? It’s artist like this who need the recognition they deserve.
I’m being very, VERY courteous and not mentioning names here. However, I feel like listing things a couple things that I don’t need to internet detective to figure it out.
1) Bronycon was mentioned as a specific frivolity. Yeah, it would seem that way and would not be very good evidence had it not been followed by a second example.
2) “Like getting a new tablet while they have one with a workable cord.“ The person in question was called out for cord issues with their tablet. Namely, the cord no longer functioning.
Let me retort with a few things:
1) If you’re going to use an example for frivolous things to be upset about artists spending their earned money on, use generic examples and not very specific occurrences that suspected anon has actually blatantly presented themselves being really upset about.
2) Don’t use examples that commission money didn’t pay for. Bronycon was attended as an invited vendor and the new tablet, despite having a working one, was a generous birthday present. Commission money was spent on groceries and bills.
3) Suspected anon was once well-known and recognized. Despite their lack of ability to take criticism, they still were known. And proceeded to flaunt it and name-drop and use people to gain higher notoriety before dropping them like a sack of old potatoes.
4) Said anon has spent/attempted to spend their commission money on wine, a Gucci back solely for a sketchbook, a whiteboard for brainstorming ideas despite a then working tablet and digital art program that would be better, and this is all just the tip.
Hypocrisy is bleeding from the post and if this person wanted popularity and recognition, they shouldn’t have squandered it on petty selfish bullshit and a diva complex the size of Russia. A sociopath with no redeeming qualities who relentlessly and vigorously burned bridges as they ran through a fandom will never amount to much until they get help to realize that maybe the problem ISN’T everybody else.
Or maybe Anon isn’t who you think it is. I remember seeing an artist ask for money because they wanted a new tablet, when the old one worked perfectly fine. I have watched as fans of an artist sent the artist money for vet bills for a pet that won’t get better no matter what he does. (Better to let the old thing die peacefully than to prolong it’s suffering) I have seen artists get hundreds of dollars from commissions and use it on a week long vacation. If they’re so strapped for cash to pay bills and buy food, why go on a lavished vacation? I have seen lesser known artists get put down for using money they got through commissions on personal items. Personal items they got AFTER paying bills and buying food. The money was left over and was their’s to spend how they wanted.
Kage, Kage, Kage. When will you stop sticking your foot in it.
I’ll be the first to say it. Despite all the strong hints that OP is who we all think it is- I will not say that it is.
Because anon is anon and there is that chance that there is some confused kid out there wondering wtf we’re talking about.
In the end. It really doesn’t matter who it is. The confession is shitty. It just is. Doesn’t matter who said it. Doesn’t matter who supports it. You stand alone in the wrong.
Speaking as a ‘invisible artist’, I don’t make a lot of money from commissions. It’d be nice. I have bills. I have expenses. But I find myself relying more on other means for emergencies. I applaude those who take the risk of making art full time, and wish I had that courage.
Because those artists worked hard for that money, for that exposure, for that list of cliental. And they’re free to spend the money they earn on what they want. It’s not like they’re, oh say, tricking and manipulating others into giving them free shit. Nope.
And from what I’ve seen, self-sustaining artists are very fiscally responsible. Some spend money to go to cons specifically to make more money. (And even that is a risk if the cost of the table/ticket/makingphycial prints outweigh the profits!) If they want to reward themselves with their hard earned money, thats their right! We’re not talking about a gross misuse of donations given for a specific cause or spending a clients money without upholding their end of the bargain. Because that’d be fucked up.
We’re talking about people who make a honest living. And those people should be supported for that.
The fact of the matter is that “popular” artists use commission money to buy food, house and utilities. When they complain about money problems, it’s usually because they cannot afford something very important like rent or medical bills. Most “popular” artists go to bronycon as venders and sell their wares so that they can be less stressed out about payment deadlines and maybe upgrade shoddy equipment.
“popular” artists complainin about money aren’t like “I really want this thing I don’t need. Everyone give me money” it’s more like “I’m in serious financial trouble so I’m forced to raise my prices and do donation streams just so I don’t die. I’m really sorry”
No matter who anon is, anon is selfish and egocentric.
I am Silver Tongue, I am an artist. I have many characters and you can check out my art in the art tag. I occasionally practice witchcraft though I don't do anything too complicated. I am girl 2 and don't know what else to put here.
