The funniest thing about this “Best Game Ever” poll is the people acting like this is the first time something like this has happened… Because it isn’t
In 2013 GameFAQs had a “Best game CHARACTER” poll. It had Mario and Cloud and Pikachu and whatever in it. But, some League of Legends voters got Draven (and Teemo) onto the ballot as well (just like this year, some Undertale fans got it onto the ballot).
Someone over at r/leagueoflegends then rallied support to hijack the poll and get Draven to win. And it was the SAME kind of situation, with outside traffic from Reddit taking over the polls while regular GameFAQs users whined and moaned that the Reddit voters were using bots. Which they weren’t. (And neither is Undertale) GameFAQs even banned Reddit rallies at some point, but to no avail.
The final “battle” came down to Draven versus Samus Aran and Solid Snake, and in the end the Draven voters outnumbered everyone else and Draven ended up winning the entire competition.
Did they do this because Draven is actually the best game character? Heck no. They did this because 1. It was funny to piss off GameFAQs users and 2. Draven’s ENTIRE personality is based around his thirst for fame and glory. If Draven were a real person, he would have spent every waking moment rallying for his victory.
There is a reason we call it the League of Draven.
The moral of the story is this: The poll is a silly popularity contest that should never have been taken so seriously. If Undertale wins, it will be because it has a lot of fans who answered the call to vote in such a contest, for a variety of reasons. There’s been no foul play to be found, just fans of Undertale turning out in great numbers for the polls.
And remember: All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again.
