Did they just borrowed sound effects from Johnny Test? That’s…not a good sign

I don’t hear any JT sound effects.

I don’t like this.

Which isn’t to say I hate it. It just leaves no impression on me. Despite foregoing the funky retro look of the original series’ art style and looking exactly like Adventure Time or Clarence instead, and despite lacking so many of the core original series crew, it’s still obviously trying its damndest to be the original series. Which makes no sense, because we already have six seasons of the original series. Why are they trying to do the same thing again?

It just feels like a hollow imitation. It’s like the animated equivalent of a little kid playing dress-up in mommy’s clothes. They tried to emulate what they saw, but they can’t possibly be what the original show was. The whole thing just seems utterly pointless to me.

Okay, I’m gonna give my thoughts on this so far, personally I won’t judge the whole series by this clip alone, but that doesn’t mean I can’t criticize what we’ve been shown so far.

First off, the art style. Now I’m all up for redesigning classic characters but this feels more like it’s copying other modern CN shows instead of doing it’s own thing. If the PowerPuff Girls hadn’t shown up I would have thought this was a clip from Clarence. Speaking of the PowerPuff Girls one thing that has bothered me about this reboot is that they barely changed the designs for the three main girls. I mean I guess they were going for the old “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” thing, but we had 6 seasons of the original. If you’re gonna reboot it, try something new with the concept, maybe make it more complex, more detailed. Instead these are just the same designs but with one or two minor tweaks and because they’re still darn in the flat retro style they stick out like a swore thumb when placed next to the Clarence-est characters.

And might as well get the big one out of the way, I do not like Buttercup’s new voice, at all. She doesn’t even sound like Buttercup (at least the original version). She sounds bored to be honest. It feels like she’s trying to be tough when she actually isn’t at all. Maybe I would let it slide if they were trying for something overall completely different with the design and tone of the show, but by the looks of this teaser they’re trying to redo the same comedy style of the original series, not to mention (I’ll say this once again) they’re using practical the same character design so hearing this new Buttercup voice coming out of the slightly tweaked classic Buttercup design is pretty darn jarring, making the whole scene clash.

I’m probably still gonna give this show a shot and watch a full episode or two before I pass my full judgement on it, but this clip… It’s not looking good for me folks.

well as for the design of the girls…
Remembe when they tried to redesign it to be in a style similar to samurai jack and the whole internet threw a shitstorm because of it?
