Remember that Spongebob episode where Spongebob and Squidward deliver a pizza? And how at the end the client isn’t happy because he didn’t get a drink with it? Well. In the Dutch dub, he doesn’t just say he wants a “drink.” He specifically mentions a “coke”. Not some sort of Dutch translation either, just “coke”. They made it a loan word.
I don’t know if that was product placement or what, but in hindsight it was sort of hilarious since, in the Netherlands, “coke” was not a well-known slang term for cola at the time, so whatever the reason the was, the entire meaning fell on deaf ears and left most viewers completely stumped. I spent years wondering what that was about. Until, you know, the internet became a thing.
Plus, these days the way he pronounces “coke” with a thick Dutch accent makes it sound like he’s saying “cock” and that’s funny.
Is even funnier when you realize that the drink he wanted in the original dub was a parody of Dr Pepper which is a Pepsi drink
