Silver Tongue
I think you misunderstood: What I meant to say was: "I recognize that the episode was about trans issues and as someone who is not trans, I understand that your opinion has more grounds than mine- but I do think that the episode's depiction of transition could be interpreted in a different light while you tended to focus more so on the admittedly awful aspects of it."

jitterbugjive:

Oh! I forgot to mention it because I didn’t understand what you were referring to: by “that way” I was referring to seeing Bubbles’s unforgivable behavior as immoral and dehumanizing. She saw Donny more as an object to walk around with and show off than an actual person/unicorn with feelings and then proceeded to make the situation all about her, as most trans-allies tend to do. I was in no way referring to trans as “that way” or “that thing.”

Something I can at least commend is that they did put her demands in a bad light.

You’re not wrong, this was a lesson that was in the episode. What’s wrong is that you’re implying that it’s THAT issue alone and NOT a trans issue.

But let me explain:

The problem was, they tried to mash two completely different issues in one moral.

This made them treat a trans issue more like an issue of just changing for someone else, and that isn’t what being trans is about. It’s the opposite of that, it’s fearing changing because people don’t want you to.

If they made it just about changing for someone else to appease them/using someone else for self gain, then it might have worked out.

But they themselves announced this as an episode that was meant to tackle trans issues, they labelled Danny as a representation of a trans/gender confused character.

I even put all the quotes from the episode that directly reference that fact, such as it being his body and his choice, and him needing to go through a journey of adolescent discovery. They really drove it in that this was also supposed to be a trans issue.

And it just wouldn’t work for a trans kid watching it.

People keep saying “kids wont understand” or “it’s just a kids show”

But there ARE trans kids who exist and who DO feel like freaks and monsters for wanting to be something else other than what everyone is telling them to be.

This episode will tell them they’re being dramatic, that they shouldn’t feel like they should change themselves, that it’s dangerous to change yourself and that you’ll be a monster if you do.

Even THIS lesson is lost, because at the start, he was adamant about being a unicorn.

If they wanted to focus on the issue you’re talking about, then here’s a BETTER way to do the episode:

Bubbles wants to see a unicorn, she meets one at the zoo but it turns out he’s actually just a pony. Her dreams dashed, she insists that he should be a unicorn, and brings him to the professor to turn him in to one. Instead, this turns him in to a monster, and he feels hurt that Bubbles only wanted to use him for her own self gain and turned him in to nothing but a freak and a spectacle. She has to apologize to him, and understand what she did wrong. She should befriend him for who he is, a pony, and accept him as such and value what good traits he has as who he really is.

I just pulled this synopsis out of my ass and it already has a better structure because it made ONE issue the focus point.

But they clashed two very different, conflicting issues, without properly researching one of those issues, and this is what resulted.

AN alternative that would actually tackle trans issues would be for donny to carefully read the information about the procedure, have it be successfull but people still refuse to believe him because he can’t use unicorn magic and the change was aesthetic but then bubbles calls out their BS because he IS a unicorn, magic or not. Then the moral could be that you should a) Carefully research if it’s something you want and make sure you know what you’re getting into and B) that you call out people who are shaming people for getting body modifications to make their outside look like who they are inside.
