Every time I see a piss baby complaining about the ppg reboot all I think about is Lenny Baxter in the ppg episode “collect her”
It has shit animation and the most recent episode was a horrible, horrible trainwreck that the writers tried to pass off as a trans-positive message which, if taken as such, makes it even worse.
Is this the hill you want to die on, my dude?
Every time I see a brat comparing legit criticism to the actions of “piss babies” all I see is Femme Fatale.
Hey, OP? Quite a lot of us that are against the reboot are women, including those of us that were teenage girls when the original series premiered. It was so popular with teens that–surprise!–they even sold shirts of it in our size. I likely still have mine somewhere.
You seem to be under the impression that the show is only “for” a certain demographic. Which demographic is that, if I may ask? Because I’m pretty sure it’s any demographic that brings in ratings. People who enjoyed or have an interest in the franchise ARE the target demographic, though the people behind it are also trying painfully hard to appeal to fans of shows like Steven Universe. This isn’t an 80’s cartoon–this is contemporary Cartoon Network. With company like Regular Show and Adventure Time, I’m pretty sure they’re damn well aware that older teens and adults enjoy cartoons.
Men choosing to watch a cartoon does not–nor will ever–“take it away” from anyone else. That’s some paranoid gatekeeping bullshit.
Bottom line: The animation looks like shit. The designs don’t have enough varying line widths, which makes them far less aesthetically appealing or dynamic (in fact, I own drawing books that highly discourage maintaining the same line width in an image, because the eye will not be drawn to anything in particular, and the image will look flat and lifeless). The most competent, intelligent female role model has been removed, presumably for being “too pretty”. What a great message to send to girls: You can’t be a leader and be pretty or sexy at the same time. They even went so far as to FLATTEN Ms. Keane’s chest. Imagine how that feels to women like me who are top heavy. It’s basically saying “Breasts are unclean things that people should never see or talk about”. None of the original voice actresses were asked back, but ALL of the male ones were, apparently to sell the show using “fresh, young faces”. Frankly, it seems insulting and misogynistic on the part of the casting director. The episode they so loudly touted as “tackling gender identity” actually turned out to be pretty fuckin’ transphobic. The girls have all been made into negative cookie-cutter stereotypes, and they’ve also had their powers weakened. It’s literally about little girls who are superheroes, but they’ve decided to make it about everything BESIDES that. If I wanted to see cliché-ridden, slice-of-life crap, I’d go watch a different show.
This steaming pile isn’t “empowering” to women or girls. It’s an EXTREMELY transparent grab towards our wallets. Literally their entire reason for the reboot is “GIRLS! They’re GIRLS! See how GIRL they are? Look at all this GIRL! GIIIIRRRRRLLLLLLL!!!!!”. That’s fucking insulting. It’s no better than the “GRRRL POWER!” bullshit that they tried to shove down our throats in the early 90’s by slapping it on everything from pencil cases to hair accessories.
I am sick and bloody tired of people trying to force-feed me diarrhea, and insist that it’s “good” for me. I’m sick of people producing half-ass content, and then expecting us to eat it up just because we identify as female. I’m tired of people dismissing valid criticism by crying “MISOGYNY!”, despite the product being poorly made to any rational outside observer.
If you want to be spoon-fed the animated equivalent of a pile of shit with glitter on it, be my guest. However, some of us actually have TASTE.
This is a perfect post and thank you so much @tenaflyviper for writing all of this.
