People see all the cool female characters in anime and think Japan is less sexist than the U.S.

Japan is actually violently obsessively sexist. The fixation there on women having value only so long as they’re youthful virgins could rival that of Medieval Europe.

As I recall idols have to sign a contract that forbids them from having boyfriends with the intent to keep them “pure” and thus favorable to their obsessive male fans

Like I have read articles talking about idols who were caught having boyfriends and they were subjected to various punishments, from making a public apology to their fans for disappointing them, paying hefty fines, and even having their heads shaved as a form of humiliation and public shaming
