I think they were /trying/ to explain that in House Guest though they weren’t very clear about why he isn’t living there in the first place?
my guess is that, most of all, it’s just not very safe for him? I mean they’ve got all sorts of acid spewing, people murdering monsters crawling through the door. steven can defend himself well enough + he’s shown to be a lot stronger than humans. but greg’s just kind of a relaxed middle aged dude, he can’t exactly punch a monster in the face u know? they leave a lot and if he’s home alone he’s kinda screwed
Also the house wasn’t made for the gems. They have their own rooms. That house was made for Steven. that entire house is Steven’s room. That man spoils that child. Most normal parents paint a room i nthe house, provide furniture.

THis is why I get mad when people call him a deadbeat dad. He literally does everything he does for steven. He probably pays the bills at the gems place and lives in his van so his son can live in a nice house. He genuinely loves his son and wants him to be safe
