The whole “Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it” thing? That only works if the history student is self-aware enough to realize when he’s accidentally invading Russia during the winter.

Also, surprisingly, Russian winters aren’t that bad. Ask the Germans. They survived 2 Russian winters before the Russians finally turned things around. It’s the Russian spring, when the ground turns to soft mud, that stopped the German counterassault that could have saved the Germans on the Eastern Front.

A Finnish winter, on the other hand…well Russia tried twice and failed both times.

Also they invaded in summer but by the time they got anywhere with a hefty population it was winter. Another thing, their coats were fur and weren’t able to be properly kept so they got big infestations and molds growing in them. Also the Russians retreated deeper into the heart of Russia and burned all their crops and homes so the Germans couldn’t use them. It was a combination of vitritian, time and sickness that leads to Germany failing that front
