I got real petty over on the Facebook page and IT WAS GLORIOUS.

This is me, going to check out Legendary Books now…

Publisher: We think that the way the fantasy genre treats women is problematic so we’re going to try and do better

A Fool: If you don’t like it why don’t you make your own!

Publisher: That

That is literally what we just said we are doing

Well, while you certainly can make a fantasy book with a 50/50 male/female ratio (or even 100% females), that doesn’t obligate anybody to meet certain ratios.

I mean, lets be honest. Ratio requirements are not the spirit of equality.

In addition, most fantasy books are about combat set in a roughly middle-ages theme, and something like 98% of the people in combat in the middle ages were, you know, guys. You can INCLUDE women because it’s fantasy, but if you want to have any sort of connection to real history, you’re going to have more guys than girls.

Still, if they’re gonna go make their own, then good on them. Lets just hope they have good writers and can come up with wonderful, believable characters who work for the story. That’s the hardest part of any fantasy story (other than picking a title.)

Shakespere, who lived in an era where there were still knights and a lot of fantasy elements, still included badass women. Remembe how lady macbeth was teh one who came up with teh plan to kill the king?
