The reason behind it is because garnet is a separate entity from ruby and sapphire. She isn’t two people, nor one person, she is an experience. Why fused, they likely don’t get a chance to flirt with each other and have fun doing things that requires two people. When they were separated playing baseball, it rekindled their love for each other, not that their love was fading in the first place, but it’s probably the first time in a while they’ve gotten to just have fun as themselves with each other in a long time
