So is Pokemon Go essentially a sneaky exercise app?

Sorta!  It’s a way to gameify collecting mapping and walking data from people, actually, but it doubles as an exercise app, or at least a get-out-of-the-house app.

The metadata (time/location) from each captured Pokemon alone could be datamining gold for the right people, but at the same time, picture for one moment the unavoidable truth that it will also someday be used to exonerate someone

“So, Mr. Briggs, you claim that you were at the park all night, and not at the bar with the victim? What proof do you have?”

“This Vulpix.”

Or better yet, convict someone. “mr Anderson, you claim you never saw the victim the night she was murdered but this witness has proof that you were talking to her in the park half an hour before she was killed. *shows pokemon go picture* there you are talking to her right behind thrust small electric rodent.”
