I have to tell someone about this because I was seething with hate today.

I work fast-food, I take the orders and I hand out the orders once they’ve been packed. Well today some woman got PO’d because she ordered a small drink, but apparently didn’t realize just how small a small drink is. It’s tiny. Like child sized.

So she comes back to the register and gets an attitude with me over it, honestly it’s only like 30 cents more for a medium so I just gave her a new cup. Not before she made sure to be very rude and aggressive with me though.

Well she finally storms off, and I go on to help the next person in line, an older man. Now look. This guy literally just watched me get berated by this woman for absolutely nothing. He was standing there the whole time and when she stormed out even he rolled his eyes at her.

So I start to try to take his order, only apparently I was not being peppy enough for his liking. Because the first word out of his mouth is “Smile.”

Now at first I didn’t quite catch what he had said, so I say “I’m sorry?” and again he says “Smile”. I pause for a second to remind myself I’m at work and need to be polite. While internally I am fighting the urge to…have some words with this guy.

So finally I’m just like “Uh…yeah…so for here or to-go?” hoping we can just move on. Only his man, he just chuckles at me and says “Smiiile!” again…

This jerk REFUSED to place his order until I would smile good enough for him?! Are. You. Kidding. Me????

And he kept saying it in this tone, like he thought he was doing me a favor. Do I freaking look like I’m in the mood for this??? You are not doing anything for me except making my day worse. So either order something, or get out of the line.

Like seriously why do men do this??? It’s really condescending at worse, and just plain annoying at best.

You said it once, I was not amused.

You said it twice, I was not amused.

You said it three times, and now I am clearly not playing along with whatever it is you’re doing.

And every time after that??? I mean c'mon now this is just becoming harassment. Order something, or go away.

AND THE BEST PART??? After I finally forced myself to smile, he finally ordered his dang food after grumbling “well that’s a fake smile…” WHAT??? WTF WERE YOU EXPECTING??? OF COURSE IT’S A FAKE SMILE YOU ASS I AM CLEARLY NOT HAPPY, AND BEING ORDERED TO SMILE BY A STRANGER DID NOT MAGICALLY CHANGE THAT.

Being told to smile at work is the worst! It’s condescending and degrading and you shouldn’t fucking do it.
