I see these plushies being sold like crazy at conventions and on-line.

Yeah, they’re kind of cute. From a distance. But when you get up close to one, you realize the material used for the eyes looks very lazily slapped on and it has a really jarring color outline around it that looks unprofessional and unpleasant. Can’t they at least cut them so it doesn’t show like that?

Not to mention, they are made out of fleece. Fleece is a fairly cheap material, yes it’s a step up from felt but it’s still considered a beginner plush maker’s material. It makes for lumpy form, and a yard of it costs maybe 6-10 dollars which is enough to make at least 3-5 of those plushies at that size.

Overall, the pattern used is very simple if you know anything about plush making, and while it’s a cute idea it really gets ruined by the material’s lack of shape and the style the eyes are put on. They don’t even bother to shape the manes or stuff them. They basically slap together the simple pattern, smack on the eyes, and then put on flat lazy cut-outs of the mane.

This is something that can be understandable and expected from a beginner, and it would be good if that were the case.

But they’ve been around for a long time, and they dish these things out like crazy, selling them like hot cakes at multiple conventions for 65-90 dollars each.

They even sell some normal sized ponies for around $200, but they are still made of fleece and cheap looking materials with very unprofessional looking patterns. To put that in to perspective, someone can easily get a decent custom high quality minky pony with embroidery eyes for roughly the same price if they know where to look.

The material cost simply does not equate to that price, nor does the quality justify it. And if people argue that it’s also charging for the work, they need to look at the sheer quantity of these things.

And no, this isn’t me whining that I can’t afford them, because I absolutely can and I purchase custom MLP plushies all the time, I even make them myself sometimes, but if I’m going to get something made from fleece I’m going to get something that’s better made and usually for a better price. Maybe 40-50 dollars, sure, I might buy one, but the thing that still puts me off is the style in which the eyes are made.

They have talent, but I feel it’s being wasted with fleece. If you watch the progression of plush makers, you can see the difference in quality that just using a different material can have. It changes the entire shape and form of the plush.

These guys are making a HUGE profit off of those plushies. Would it kill them to at least upgrade their materials and quality to something like minky and embroidery?

But hey, I guess if it sells and they can keep on selling these in large amounts, good on them. They figured out how to pretty much dupe the system and make a huge profit off of a cheap and easy to replicate product.

I suppose from a business standpoint, they certainly can be admired.

I just wish I could see them grow and introduce higher quality product after all this time. Maybe if they did, I’d give them more of a chance.

Fleece from 6-10 bucks a yard? I would like to be where they are. Around here fleece is from 10-30 bucks a yard depending on texture and style. Honestly people like this need to think first, are they able to create these kinds of plushies? My guess is no and they just feel like complaining over something they either can’t do or can’t afford to buy.

I think you missed a section

*has a pet peeve with people not reading things fully*

I’ve actually browsed around for pony plush prices on DA, and I’ve found a few plushie artists that charge less than what CC does for a full sized plush, with embroidered features and everything, and this is including shipping costs. If I wanted a plush of my precious OCs I certainly won’t want to spend $60+ on a pony not big enough to hug, like why is it so much for a small plushie from CC made with the cheapest materials? Bigger question is why do so many people eat them up at conventions??
