the character development in steven universe is interesting to me because it doesn’t start from scratch… the gems already know each other and have had consistent relationships for a very long time, but one of them passes away so they have to completely rebuild those relationships around that tragedy… it’s much less the standard “characters meet and grow closer over time” and more “they love each other very deeply but have all changed and have to learn to hold those relationships and support each other again”
