By the Pentagon’s own admission, their nearest troops they could send were a twelve hour flight away. The nearest fighter jets would take 4-6 hours to get on station. As numerous Republican-led inquiries into Benghazi found, the US had no deployable military forces in the region and no actionable intelligence to go off of. The only nearby forces were CIA paramilitary, and they were doing something else at the time and couldn’t/wouldn’t break their mission cover until it was too late.

That is a failure of the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies, not the Secretary of State. Besides, it wasn’t her job to authorize military operations. That’s either a local decision made by the military forces that have come under attack, or a decision made by the President/Congress.
