so I was thinking about @faelapis‘s theory that the battle depicted in same old world was a raid on the beta kindergarten, and I feel like I can come up with a reasonable timeline of events.

5750 years ago: blue diamond’s court (”a team of diplomatic gems”) arrived to investigate the “small, persistent group of rebels” that were interfering with the colony’s progress.  

somewhere between 5750 and 5500 years ago, rose could have attacked blue diamond again. she wouldn’t have sapphire’s future vision to anticipate when they would strike. (garnet could have used her future vision to determine when she was most vulnerable) and they did:

lapis was somehow separated from the rest of blue diamond’s court.

5,500 years ago: the rebellion has escalated into a civil war- and things were going badly for homeworld. unlike rose, they weren’t able to heal cracked gems. so they had to rely on a strategy of “make more and more troops”. they made the beta kindergarten because they were scrambling for extra soldiers. 

the crystal gems attacked beta. this is why jasper says she’s been fighting since he second she emerged. this is why ruby has heard tales that she emerged with her helmet on and how she took down 80 crystal gems before the sun went down. this is when garnet and bismuth took on three battalions* of quartz soldiers and “walked out with our stones shining brighter than when we walked in”

*unless gems units of measurement is different than ours, each battalion is hundreds of soldiers. that makes jasper 80 look puny.

and lapis was caught in the middle.

she was picked up by an amethyst and mistaken for a crystal gem. and why wouldn’t she be? while centi’s story shows that homeworld also had diverse ranks, if they attacked a kindergarten then the only soldiers homeworld would have around would have been quartzes. and a water gem like lapis sicks out like a sore thumb in a desert.

even if someone from blue’s court recognized her, she had gone missing after the attack (and most likely stayed missing for awhile), only to appear again when he crystal gems launched a devastating attack. it would be reasonable to assume that she betrayed homeworld.
