Wasn’t that how it went in the first couple elections? The runner-up becomes vice president? And then Thomas Jefferson swiftly got rid of it when *he* became president because it meant he had to work with Aaron Burr?
Actually yes. Then when they started having a bipartisan system, the party chose the VP. Then, because that caused conflict and infighting, they let the presidential candidate choose the VP
