let’s all remember that Steven Universe is a show for children
children do not have the option to cut family members with problematic opinions out of their lives
children go to major family gatherings like Thanksgiving whether they want to or not, whether they feel safe there or not
Rebecca Sugar is trying to give those children coping strategies
she is not trying to say “everyone is obligated to forgive everyone who has ever hurt them” she is trying to say “here is Steven, a naturally friendly and empathetic person, modeling a set of behaviors that CAN, in the right circumstances, result in positive attitude changes”
