The power of the electorate, visualized, in this ground-breaking map from Scribner’s Statistical Atlas (1883). As noted by historian Susan Schulten, the map employs county level data, for the first time, to reveal more nuanced spatial patterns than we’re allowed for by a state level map of Electoral College returns (see inset map). Commonplace by today’s standards, to be sure, by unprecedented in 19th century American cartography. And while the map also looks quite familiar, note that the colors denoting the Democrat and Republican parties are the opposite of what they are today. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
