I honestly don’t know why everybody is making such a big deal about it there’s some people who didn’t like tracer until ‘HOLY SHIT SHES GAY? THAT INSTANTLY MAKES HER BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE!’ I honestly just couldn’t care, she could fuck snowflakes, I just simply wouldn’t care, for the simple matter that sexual orientation doesn’t matter to me. So what I was saying was I didn’t care the 1st time I saw people freaking out about it and I still don’t care now.
Here’s a little diagram of what it’s been like for the longest time
You see, for quite some time, LGBT members have either been poorly written, killed off (see bury your gays) or has just been a gimmick. There have been there have been some that reach all 3 like PB&marceleen or Korra&asami, but it’s still super rare to find. Tracer is the posterchild for overwatch. The most iconic character. The one that is the most advertised. And being openly gay gives gay people someone big that they can relate to. If you’re a minority and you see someone like you being a badass, it makes you feel good.
Tmw, people actually fucking care about the sexuality of a fucking video game character, I’m bisexual, overweight, and have a mental disorder, I still don’t give a shit.
That’s fantastic but for a lot of people, life fucking sucks so being able to see themselves in a character who is badass is a big thing. Don’t try to invalidate other peoples happiness with your own cynicism.
Let me put my thoughts in better words
I can see why people care and I do believe role models are important, but I feel people are selling themselves short and selling their role model short, if the only reason they like them is because they’re gay, I’m going to open up a bit, my father wasn’t a part of my life, so I found a role model in Eminem, as I grew older, my grandfather became my role model, he was strong, brave fair and honest, who I wanted to be, I personally feel relating to a trait like sexual orientation is selling yourself short and your role model short
It’s not the only reason people like tracer. Lots of people liked her from the start and being gay was just a bonus. people don’t only like her because she’s gay.
