bishkebab:

Anti Ace discourse has taken this fascinating new turn where people are complaining that considering asexuality an orientation instead of just a description of sex drive would somehow prevent gay people who don’t want to have sex from claiming their identity, as if asexuals are trying to dictate other people’s identities (they’re not) and as if romantic and sexual attraction can’t possibly be distinct things at all and sexual attraction 100% correlates to libido only, and as if LGBT spaces and discourse automatically include people who don’t experience sexual attraction in their narratives and never assume same gender attraction to mean “romantic and sexual attraction”, and as if there are hundreds of True Queers who are harmed by the very existence of asexuality as an identity (despite the overwhelming majority of anecdotes on those posts being from people for whom discovering the existence of asexuality helped them affirm their identities), and as if aro/ace people don’t exist….

I mean….gender, sexual orientation, attraction, sex….these are all socially defined concepts/constructs, and in a society where orientations were and always had been clearly defined as “romantic AND/OR sexual attraction”, and/or sexual attraction was automatically described on a scale, and/or desire for sex wasn’t assumed to be part of attraction, asexuality as a distinct orientation might not exist…. except, you know, ARO/ACE PEOPLE EXIST

I know what you mean. Someone tried to claim that by me being ace, I’m somehow homophobic.
