People who are overly critical of Steven universe don’t understand how good we all really have it.

Steven universe could have been a one in a million show with a majority male cast, zero serious subjects being tackled and a tiny budget in some alternate universe

I just think we should be thankful for this great thing that exists in the world instead of punishing it forgot being perfect.

To be honest how much better could you do with the small budget and constraints from cartoon network?

The other thing is, this is a kids show primarily. In terms of content the messages are always gonna be simpler than what a more adult audience would love. Yeah, SU is brilliant in being so complex and threading different story lines (important or filler) together but one needs to remember this is a children’s show for Cartoon Network at its core. The Crewniverse know they need to cater to teens and adults, but children are their primary audience and at the forefront of the viewing, which means that the show can’t get too complicated as it would be difficult to keep up - especially as CN is only interested In being able to mess the story about with lots of reruns.

This is only in terms of plot and story cuz I’m seeing a lot of hate thrown about on how Steven didn’t get answers from his mother (for example) among other things, and it’s because the show wasn’t originally intended for us. As a teenage/young adult audience we need to learn to not be greedy and be patient and appreciate all it gives us. Yes, it’s good to be critical and good to debate and find flaws, but when you’re constantly in the discourse so much so you’re beginning to be brought down by it as a whole, that’s when you should stop and look back. It’s a wonderful and pretty progressive show and as an avid fan I do think there are definitely improvements to be made, but we shouldn’t be greedy and demand a show to comply to standards that are way too high.

No show is ever perfect, and what some want Steven Universe to become is something that is quite far off. Personally, I believe the show has the potential to be as good as what people expect and is going through a small patch, but it’ll never cease to be beautiful to me and I’ll always love it for what it is, and I’ll always appreciate the art and the music and all the dedication that goes into it – and that’s how to be a patient fan and not be too greedy.

I don’t get too involved with any discussions about it on here, but a lot of times I just sit back and think about how amazing it is that Steven Universe is a prime-time, super-successful show that kids love to watch. I mean….it’s an extended musical about a boy getting raised by his aunts (one of which was obviously in love with his mom and one…two?? of which are in a relationship with each other), where the female characters are the prevailing forces and more often than not voices of reason, and that seriously confronts hard topics like different family dynamics, abusive relationships vs. healthy relationships, depression/anger/regret, recognizing that your idols are imperfect….

Sure, it might go about it in a lighter way than you’d expect, but the show doesn’t shy away from something just because it’s hard to deal with. It acknowledges the problem and faces it when it feels right for the plot, which is so, SO awesome.
