He’s been acting like this for well over an hour (I got back from work to find him acting like this so I don’t know how long he’s been like this)

I’m pretty concerned, especially since he just struck at himself too and it seems to be getting more violent. If you know what’s going on please let me know!

Its mating season! In the springtime males go crazy looking for a mate, if they slither over themselves they consider themselves a possible mate and start the movements of mating, which is the obnoxious twitching you see here :) As for striking at himself, I can imagine he startled himself and then struck. He will likely be out and about all spring doing this as well. Look up videos of corn snakes mating, you will see both snakes doing this behavior. :)

I’ve never seen that before o: do all snake species do this or is it most common in colubrids or corn snakes? I have had a male ball python for a few years and have never seen that before!

It is a corn snake thing, possibly some other colubrids as well :) They are veeeery active breeders, haha

Welcome to having boy corn snakes.

This is pretty common with male corns in particular and it’s not a sign of illness nor dangerous to the snake. It’s just obnoxious and potentially a little gross. If you have multiple snakes be sure to wash your hands between interacting with, feeding, or handling them.
You should always be doing that anyway but especially this time of year, or you may find yourself the target of unwanted reptile affections.

I had a rescued adult male corn at a pet shop where I worked try to make a snake/human arm hybrid. His name after that was Rudeboy or just Rudy for short.

You can help to dissuade the behavior by increasing the time his lights are on to try to trick his hormones into thinking it’s summer and mating season is over already.
