Someone disliking something is not an attack on you if you happen to like it.
Something I’ve seen lately that I haven’t talked about much: the feeling that if someone says they dislike something, it is an attack on you if you disagree.
There’s a big difference between bullying “you shouldn’t like this, you have to like that” and simply having a difference of opinion.
A difference of taste is not a personal attack.
I’ve been saying a lot lately about how people can ship what they want to ship, and how it’s not “wrong” to like a ship, but…also…
It’s not wrong to DISLIKE things.
You don’t have to like everything that is popular. You aren’t obligated to like everything your friends like.
You can still be friends with people who like a character, ship, or idea that you don’t like, and vice versa. All you have to have is some basic AND MUTUAL personal respect.
No, I don’t go around talking about certain characters, ships, or ideas with friends I know don’t like those things, but also, those people know I DO like those things and don’t give me grief for enjoying them. And it’s also the other way around.
I know sometimes there’s this feeling that there’s a popular idea in the fandom and that if you don’t like it, there’s something wrong with you, but an idea is not The One Truth just because it’s popular.
It’s ok to not like things, no matter how popular they are.
