It’s mostly because real guns are expensive as hell, and dangerous on a movie set. So when they can get away with it, they just spray paint a nerf gun. Mostly unless their is a budget for a unique weapon they’ll just take a pre-existing product and just paint it.

Also, airsoft is pretty common when you have to use more realistic looking weapons. (The advent of CGI means they can just add in the muzzle flash in post if needed.)
