Relief of Bes in the forecourt of the Hathor Temple at Dendera(Egipt). The dwarf-like god was seen as the protector of pregnant women, newborn babies and the family. With his grotesque features he is meant to scare off the bad spirits of the night and guard over the safety of the sleeping household. The relief dates to the Ptolemaic-Roman period.
