R.L. Stine never included divorce, drug use, or child abuse in his Goosebumps books because he wanted to make sure that kids understood they were reading a fantasy that could never happen in real life. Source

by god, it worked.
they were great scary stories that could give me chills and maybe freak me out just a little bit but not enough to actually keep me up at night or anything, because there was always just enough immersion to give the creeps but not so much immersion that it legitimately messed with my head
i never realized just how well thought out they really were!
