Fandom culture’s gotten so weird in the past couple months. Like, just in 2017 we’ve had:
- a fanartist getting fed cookies with needles in ‘em bc they shipped something that another person didn’t agree with
- someone taking photos of an animation studio’s unreleased work and putting said studio under actual legal fire bc that person threatened to keep sharing them publicly unless that company made a ship canon
- Dream Daddy, a LGBT+-friendly game made by LGBT+ people, being out for barely a week and people are already receiving death threats and others are giving out false info about the game bc some people aren’t into Game Grumps
Seriously, are y’all okay?? Like, I know people are entitled to their opinions about ships and stuff, and sometimes making your voice heard about problems in works of fiction can lead to positive change in some aspects, but like???? honestly??? if you think hating on ships/making your ship canon or w/e is worth someone’s health/safety/job, you really need to rethink your priorities.
Wait what the fuck was the needle cookie thing because I think I missed that one and I kind of need the details now
someone showed up at a con where the fanartist had a table (I think) and gave her cookies. the cookies had needles in them; not like one needle per cookie, but a more unnecessary amount of needle per cookie. I think she was fine and didn’t need surgery, but I’m not super clear on the aftermath of needle eat.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C_hAresU0AAOwrN?format=jpg this is the result and no it ain’t food coloring. Human lives should never be jeopardized because you don’t like something someone draws. Ffs.
My hate for this bullshit is eternal and never ending.
Like I keep saying, this is why pushes for representation kinda seemed ominous to me.
Like, I know they started with people trying to gently say to white writers, most of whom were big name and rich, “hey could you put a few more WOC in here” or “hey could you have some of these hinty gay couples end up together”
But the more Byzantine it got, the more I started to think “so what happens when a minority writer is too establishment? What happens when she wants to critique her community through her fiction? What happens when she wants to say ‘this group ain’t perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s home?’”
I wish I could say I was surprised by the backlash to Dream Daddy, but the only thing I’m surprised by is how long it took.
I’ve said it again and again but
“We don’t mean minority creators!”
…There’s no way not to eventually mean us.
