When translating Steven Universe into Dutch, they ran into a problem: Dutch has no one-syllable word for “gem”. So what they did was extend “gem” to “gemstone”, and use that as the name of the crystal gems: “de edelstenen”.

All well and good. But that means that whenever they’re just referred to as gems, without the crystal part… They’re called “stenen”. Just “stones”. They’re stones. The entire race is just called the stones. Theyre just fuckin stones. I’m laughing
