Context: The party has found an old statue in the middle of the woods and are trying to identify the figure. The party includes a half-orc paladin, who’s been getting consistently bad rolls this session. I’m the DM.
Paladin: Can I roll Religion to see if it’s a god or something?
DM: Sure.
Paladin: *rolls a nat1*
DM: Alright. This figure looks extremely familiar to you, but unfortunately you can’t quite place it.
Druid: Can I try?
DM: Go ahead.
Druid: *rolls better*
DM: You’re not very familiar with the gods of this land, but the appearance rings a bell somewhere. You believe that this might be a statue of the local moon goddess. And (Paladin), at this point it clicks for you as well, and you begin to feel rather stupid when you belatedly recognize the statue… of your paladin deity.
Paladin:… Shit.
