We wear masks because the people we are working against, fascists, are violent scumbags. Covering your face helps against identification by fascists after the action. 

We also wear masks because we believe it is right to stop the spread of fascism by any means, even if that means physically confronting fascists, or blocking their route with barricades, for example. Wearing a mask and “blocking up” (being in a black bloc in black bloc clothes) makes it hard for the cops to identify individuals who maybe broke a law, but did what was right: stopping fascists.
