Seriously it is perfect. That’s one of the things FMA did better than FMAB. These subtle moments perfectly draw you deeper into the story. Who’s the kid? Why did the cocky Roy hesitate? What does this freaking MEAN? We learn later, but it really draws you into Roy’s backstory from this moment. There’s more to him than he seems. The same holds true with the Elric brothers’ backstory. It’s richer and less thrown in your face. We also get more invested in Trisha early on, which also helps us understand how much her death truly impacted Ed and Al and why they so wanted to bring her back. Sorry to rant ^_^
