anime writer: okay so this fight scene has a lot of environmental destruction. the ground is fracturing, buildings are crumbling. these lads are going ham,,
animator:
important additions giving credit where credit is due
I was wondering what this was referencing and I found this which taught me 2 things
- This man had an incredible influence in the world of animation, and his action scenes are a delight to watch
- animators do love their flying cubes
it also makes the scenes more dynamic through this style. a lot of those scenes involved the shifting and crashing of mountains, buildings, and ground. logically, drawing every bit of detail involved with those processes would drain a lot of resources. but also, they probably wouldnt look as good. the cubes add the separation of space into the composition and add contrast to their organic background. using cubes also allows the amount of tension in the debris to be conveyed through stretching and squashing and makes the movement of the debris more easily identifiable
