zakur35 I wanted to answer your question like this so the pictures could be better seen. uwu But on to some headcanons!

-Yoshisaurus is the full name of the species while “Yoshi” is the name the gang calls their dino friend! They’re a race of sapient dinosaurs who are native to what’s best known as Yoshi Island. They’re about as big as a small-ish horse and are omnivorous, though their preferred food of choice is often fruits and fish. They live in tribes and the vast majority of them are peaceful and friendly. Though they prefer to hunt and forage without use of weaponry, Yoshisaurs are known to use tools to aid them in life, as well as build simplistic shelters for homes. The largest tribe on Yoshi Island is led by their chief Melon, the Yoshisaurus Mario knows as the one who found him as a baby.

-Yoshisaurs are genderless and reproduce asexually. They have been known to court one another and look for mates but it isn’t necessary to produce offspring. Generally, a yoshisaur must be very well fed and healthy before they can lay a fertile egg that will hatch into a pup.

-Yoshisaurs have the ability to spontaneously lay a completely hollow egg to act as weaponry in self defense. A common misconception is that they carelessly sacrifice their young for self-preservation, but this is entirely false. You can tell the difference between a hollow egg and a “live” egg by how their spots look: hollowed eggs have duller and much larger spots: there’s only about 5 spots on them at most. Live eggs have bright, vibrant spots and are speckled in several of them.

-Being genderless, Yoshisaurs as a culture don’t put much stock in pronouns; it simply isn’t much of a concept for them. If a pronoun is chosen it is respected without question, but the majority of them generally go by the equivalent of “They/them”. The Yoshi we know prefers male pronouns.

-Yoshisaurs have their own language, but human languages are hard for them to grasp: their vocal chords are built for chirps, growls, roars, not actual human speech, so it’s near impossible for them to speak it. They’re able to understand it just fine though. As such, they are very expressive with their body language and vocalizations and are usually taught sigh language.

-Melon is the parent of Yoshi, and is the one who introduced Mario to their son when he came to visit the island. I’m imagining that Mario and Luigi’s parents come to the island and bring offerings as thanks for saving their children, and this is when Melon introduces their newly freshly hatched youngster. The trio have been childhood friends ever since.
