Aight then, time for a long post, so just hit J now if you don’t care.
This is some straight up hack DMing, putting your players on a time limit that they’re not told about? Bad DMing. Doing so cause they don’t want to go along with your boring “kill the lich” plotline? Absolute railroady hack DMing please never play this game again.
If you play for the sake of “beating” the players you’ve got the wrong philosophy, cause as the DM you can just go “rocks skeletons fall everyone dies, no rolls or responses allowed” like the dude in the story does, done, you’ve beaten the players and had your “gotcha” moment at the low cost of having a shit ending to your campaign.
If you refuse to adapt to what your players want to do, just tell them to find a diffrent campaign, find people that are interested in your plot. don’t play a whole campaign for the sake of throw a temper tantrum at the end of it, thats immature and not good behaviour as a DM, and its just a waste of time, much like me writing this post is.

Anyways i’m off to strangle some /tg/ dwellers.

you know what pisses me off the most about all this? the DM could have easily just had a group of NPCs to handle the lich. The players are only the hero of their own story. they dont HAVE to be the hero of a different story. If the lich was such a big threat its unreasonable to think that NOBODY would do anything to stop it.

you make a compelling point 

in my own campaign there was a revolutin plotline that was integral to a player who could only make the first session that the players would have to get involved with at some point while they were working to defeat a lich. rather than scrap it i just reworked it so it was less integral to the overal story and had some NPCs who do a lot of the stuff involved in that so the players only proved minor assistance  while they focus on their main lich quest
