it’s really weird to me that people are so willing to criticize unhealthy dog breeds (pugs, neos, english bulldogs, etc) but so many of those same people are completely silent about unhealthy cat breeds (persians, exotics, munchkins, scottish folds)

unhealthy cat breeds

image

Manx

-tailless gene is lethal in its homozygous form

-cats with partial tails are prone to an extremely painful form of arthritis

-Manx Syndrome, a condition where the spine is shortened too much by the tailless gene. can seriously damage the nerves and spinal cord and also cause digestive issues. affects nearly 30% of all manxes

image

Donskoy

-A Russian breed, completely unrelated to the more popular Sphynx

-This breed’s hairless gene can result in Feline Ectodermal Dysplasia in its homozygous form

image

Munchkin

-prone to lordosis and pectus excavatum

-Short-legged gene is lethal in its homozygous forn

Persian (Modern)

-Too many to list, just click here

image

Exotic Shorthair

-See Persian

image

Ragdoll

-Severely inbred

-Lots of Urinary problems

-Prone to HCM

-A swedish study showed that Ragdolls and Siamese cats had the lowest survival rate of any of the common cat breeds

image

Scottish Fold

-Osteochondrodysplasia is the main issue here

-also prone to polycystic kidney disease, cardiomyopathy and degenerative joint disease

image

Foldex

-dear god why

-whywhywhywhy

-exotic shorthair/scottish fold cross, so they have most (if not all) of the issues both breeds have

-seriously whose idea was this

image

Siamese

-Progressive retinal atrophy

-more prone to vestibular disease and feline hyperesthesia syndrome than most other breeds

-the albinism gene that gives them their trademark color also gives them eye problems

Wow I didn’t know this about Ragdolls and Siamese

I didn’t see any people mention this in the comments so I want to add that Japanese Bobtail Cats do not have genetic issues associated with their bobbed tails.  The gene that makes their tales bobbed is different than in Manxes and American Bobtails, and as far as I’m aware (correct me if I’m wrong) occurred naturally.

I wanted to point this out because I already know someone on here is going to associate “bobtail = unhealthy” and cause panic by trying to claim animal cruelty towards a perfectly healthy cat
