i really love how they always make david tennant drop his Scottish accent no matter what role he’s playing
David Tennant: *Scottish noises*
the director of whatever tv show hes in:
I know this is a lighthearted post - I definitely chuckled - and I hate to be That Guy but it’s because of the social impact of English imperialism. He elects to use an English accent in lieu of his usual speech because he’s noticed he gets more callbacks and gigs when he drops his conventionally unattractive accent and uses one that’s more socially acceptable for Main Characters ™ and television stars on British TV & productions.
The Scottish accent is considered lowbrow, right along with the Irish and North accents - uneducated, angry, tropey, what have you. Scots had to learn proper English to be taken seriously and participate in government & other British social spheres. Today kids who speak Scots - the language from which the Scottish accent originated - are corrected on their words in school and taught to use only the English counterpart instead, because that’s the education standard.
Anyway, it’s the lasting social implications of English imperialism and cultural genocide.
As we’re all thinking about David Tennant because of Good Omens at the minute, I’d like to point out that the same is true of Michael Sheen’s Welsh accent, too. Aziraphale and Crowley are played by two Celtic men who are putting on English accents because there’s no work for them otherwise.
I am Silver Tongue, I am an artist. I have many characters and you can check out my art in the art tag. I occasionally practice witchcraft though I don't do anything too complicated. I am girl 2 and don't know what else to put here.
