Isn't the security officer supposed to question the guy *before* calling the cops? Like isn't that their whole job?

In theory, sure. In reality it’s some guy with minimal training getting paid slightly more than minimum wage who doesn’t actually have any more authority to stop anyone than any other random civilian. It’s rarely come up with the places I’ve been, but if someone doesn’t do what I tell them threatening to call the cops is go to number one, because they’re the ones with the actual authority. From what I’ve seen presented of the story the guard does seem to have been overly zealous and I don’t think I would have carried it that far, but my experience is that most security guards are morons.
