Hagrid mentions at some point that not everyone sends their kids to Hogwarts. Some of them homeschool them in magic (and maybe in other subjects, or maybe send them to local schools), some send them abroad (like Lucius wanted to do with Draco).

So then in book7, Tom Riddle via the Ministry both bans muggleborn students from attending, and makes Hogwarts attendance mandatory for everyone else. No more sending your kids abroad for school, and no more homeschooling.

Now I want the scene, September first, 1997, of the Welcoming Feast as all the firsties are walked in for the Sorting and the chatter swells because the line seems a lot longer than normal, and don’t you think some of those kids are a bit taller than usual, and I could swear that’s my weird neighbor-

A really angry (and terrified) fifteen-year-old homeschooler flips the double bird at the entire Great Hall as the Sorting Hat’s dropped over them.

Reblogging myself to add the thought that the Weasleys are canonically known for having large families yet, aside from the wedding, we only meet one set of them. Book seven mandatory Hogwarts attendance is a PRIME OPPORTUNITY to fill a fanfic with Weasley OC’s. Please picture Ginny going from the baby of her family to suddenly the leader because she’s the only familiar face in this madhouse that knows how it works.
