I truly believe subtle parody is one of the worst ways to get your point across to a wide audience if you’re using parody as a genuine avenue for criticism. In an artistic sense you could say someone misunderstanding a parody to be what it represents highlights the parody’s faithfulness to what its criticizing, but I think a successful parody is obvious in its exaggeration and not simply trying to recreate what it represents. A misunderstood parody has failed to convey the distance needed for someone to know its imitation and not reenactment
