i feel like people hate abstract art not because its “ugly” or “a thing a kid can make” but because all the well known abstract artists are pretentious assholes who think theyre soooooo galaxy brain for making bad art because it “challenges what art is” or some bullshit and we just hate their guts

like “blue seaweed” by jackson pollock? bullshit. this is so fucking ugly i can practically taste the overpriced wine he was sipping while bragging to art critics about how woke he was for not making “good” art

this painting jenna marbles made with her boyfriend for fun? love it. its so funky they just went the flow and they had fun making it. i wanna hang this in my house

Okay i can get behind this tho

Not to come white knight a dead artist but…That’s not a painting by Jackson Pollock, that’s a painting currently being sold for 265 dollars online by Jesse Milano. Jackson Pollock didn’t brag to critics at all, he was a struggling alcoholic of a reclusive nature and likely had bipolar disorder. He often used his art to express angst more than anything else as well as probably a coping mechanism.

The only people bragging Jackson and his work were his friends, commissioners and acquaintances. Critics weren’t too fond of him and he was mocked on several magazines. The peak of his career was in the 50s, a few years short of his death.

In 1951 he decided to use darker colours to express his anger and frustration, and NOBODY (literally no one) bought any of his works. He was forced to go back to his brighter colours in order to continue making money, but he fell deeper and deeper into alchoolicism because of the pressure that came with his popularity. He often expressed his frustration at the pressure that came with the demands from buyers. In 1956, at 44, Jackson died in a car accident because of his alcohol addiction.

His wife tried her best to keep his art alive after his death and was quite successful at it. Jackson’s works only began selling for millions in the 70s, long after his death.

While I despise pretentious assholes in the art industry, Jackson Pollock is not one of them. There are some paintings of him I consider aesthetically pleasing and some that I don’t, but he was undoubtedly passionate about his work, which he expressed himself through.

okay so first of all i had NO IDEA that wasnt one of his works, it showed up as the first image in a google search so thanks for that correction!

second of all holy shit i hate his legacy even more now? art snobs exploited this guys serious mental health issues and then later turned it into a story of how he “subverted art norms” and that so fucking gross. my original point still stands but ye i shouldve picked some actual shitty artist instead of this poor fellow

Yeah, that’s fine! I looked up Jackson Pollock’s work before writing my reply because I didn’t remember ever seeing that piece before and it also showed up in early results but if you click it you’ll actually see it’s not his.

And they definitely exploited his art to hell and back. Jackson didn’t even really “create” the technique he’s so famous for, he learned about liquid painting techniques at age 24 in a workshop being held by Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros and began experimenting with these techniques on his own studio and developed his own artstyle through other influences, as all artists do, and critics later labelled this as the “dipping technique” or “dip painting”. I don’t think he even had a say in it since he mostly referred to his artwork as “motion and memories” made visible lmao

His art was also exploited by the US government during the Cold War…
