Huh I wonder what Bernie was doing when that happened

“Chicago police officers carry protester Bernie Sanders, 21, in August 1963 to a police wagon from a civil rights demonstration at West 73rd Street and South Lowe Avenue. He was arrested, charged with resisting arrest, found guilty and fined $25. He was a University of Chicago student at the time.” From a Chicago Tribune article about this picture specifically

This protest, by the way, was a protest against segregation in the Chicago school system. Black students were only allowed to attend classes in portable trailers (referred to as Willis Wagons, named after the school superintendent Benjamin Willis) so remember how everyone makes jokes about how those shitty temporary classrooms had to become permanent classrooms because the US doesn’t fund education nearly as much as it should? Yeah only black students had to use those shitty temporary classrooms, while white students enjoyed actual buildings with proper infrastructure.

Bernie was demonstrating against this, was arrested, charged with resisting that arrest, because he had done nothing wrong, and was fined the modern equivalent of almost $200 for it.
