And, in all honesty I think that I would have liked it more if she weren’t blind.

Now, before I get bombarded by hate, please hear me out.

I didn’t think Snowdrop was BAD at all. In fact, I enjoyed it. It’s just…like Digibrony said, it seemed to be a bit of a sadfic (a story that pulls on your heartstrings intentionally to get you to feel a certain emotion). And this is also fine, but I don’t really like to be made sad intentionally and I think this also takes away from it. I mean, a true emotionally compelling piece of art should make you feel emotional just by being IT, not having to give characters flaws to pull on your heartstrings intentionally. And I feel like the main (if not the entire reason) that this is a sadfic with a mary-sue as a main character is because Snowdrop is blind.

I think that Snowdrop is a bit of a mary-sue (or more accurately a sympathetic-sue), because 1. s\She is more aesthetically appealing than the other ponies in the video (seriously, look at them all together. It’s just like “Gee, I wonder who the main character is…” and that’s something I really hate), so the viewer is more keen on liking her, and 2. SHE IS BLIND! What is more sympathetic than a poor little adorable blind filly in the world of MLP? Nothing. She was practically ASKING for your sympathy. She had you wrapped around her hoof IMMEDIATELY.

And I think this really takes away from the story because Snowdrop really DIDN’T need to be blind. It doesn’t give her character any real growth except that she feels worthless. BUT she is also a blank-flank, and we have seen blank-flanks get teased harshly and feel worthless within the context of MLP itself. It would have been just as easy to give Snowdrop her sight and make her classmates tease her and not want to work with her because she is a blank-flank and therefore has no talent to contribute to the group. Then Snowdrop would have been able to see the snow as stars and carve a snowflake and all of that. Broneis may not have been crying at the end, but I think that would have been better.

After all, we would have related to the character more, since we’ve seen blank-flanks in the show, and plenty of us have felt like we were useless because we haven’t had any talent. Not because we were blind.

So yeah. I think if she weren’t blind, Snowdrop wouldn’t be a mary-sue, and I would have liked her and the video a heck of a lot more.

TL;DR: Snowdrop is a mary-sue because she was blind, and I think she would have been a much better character if the reason she felt useless and was teased was instead because she was a blank-flank. She didn’t NEED to be blind at all.

Oh okay I got a problem with this SNOW DROP IS NOT A MARY SUE

a marry sue is a over compicated design and snowdrop is not she is pretty simple and loveable the reason why she is blind takes a big part in the whole animation! Are you really that stupid blank flanks are usual! having a blind filly is different and it seems more creative that way

No, she was just a one dimensional character whose design more complex than the others in her class and it would have been infinitely better if her problem was just being the last blank flank in her class. There is a difference between sympathetic sadness and genuine sadness. Genuine sadness comes from seeing a character we can relate to being forced to suffer. We can’t relate to her because she’s blind so it’s sympathy.

Also, a mary sue isn’t only based on how it looks. I mean, someone could make a simple, bicoloured OC and have her start dating shining armour. That would still be a mary sue.
